How Do You Remove an Earwax Blockage?

Clogged ears are fairly common.

Your ear can feel clogged when you’re congested, or when you have fluid in the ear. But the sensation of a blocked ear can also happen when you have impacted earwax. It could even be an early sign of hearing loss. If a clogged ear is causing hearing loss, you should get it checked out immediately, especially if it is in one ear only.

Professional earwax removal is necessary to safely and effectively clear severe blockage (impacted wax) that cause hearing loss, pain and balance issues, without risking damage to the delicate eardrum or ear canal. At SoundEar Audiology, we are professionally trained to gently clear out earwax using suction and/or syringing methods. We’ll also provide tips for good ear hygiene to help prevent wax issues in the future.

Can earwax cause problems?

Even mild hearing loss has an effect on your brain, which can negatively impact your memory as well. That’s why earwax — or any ear blockage that causes difficulties with your hearing — needs to be addressed before problems get worse.

If you’re experiencing hearing loss, even if it is mild, call us to schedule a hearing assessment and visual inspection of your ear canal so we can identify and treat any issues. Remember that sudden hearing loss can also feel like your ear is blocked by wax. So if you have a feeling that your ear is clogged or blocked, give us a call.

Earwax removal: Suction and more

Usually, earwax washes out in the shower on its own or gets pushed out of the ear. But impacted earwax can block the ear canal and in long-standing cases cause infections, requiring professional removal for safety and effectiveness.

Suction is a safe, gentle, and modern way to remove earwax — and we are proud to be the only audiology clinic in Saskatchewan to offer suction earwax removal services.

Our trained audiologists use a tiny, medical-grade suction tool (similar to a vacuum) to clear wax buildup while looking directly into your ear. By allowing wax to be removed with extreme care and precision, the suction procedure is setting the standard for earwax removal.

  • Dry and comfortable: No water is used, so your ear stays dry and clean. This makes suction a good option if you have sensitive ears, narrow ear canals, a history of ear infections, or eardrum perforations.
  • Quick results: Most appointments take only a few minutes, and many patients notice clearer hearing right away.
  • What it feels like: You may notice some soft crackling or squeaking sounds and feel mild suction. This is normal and usually not painful.
  • Why it’s preferred: Because we can see inside your ear throughout the procedure, suction is a precise and highly effective method for removing earwax.

Besides the suction procedure, we offer other common earwax removal methods such as water irrigation/syringing or with the help of a wax probe to safely address hearing issues caused by wax. During your consultation, we’ll determine the best approach for you.
